Facebook video scam
I got an email from one of my friends over at Facebook. He has sent me a video link. As this friend doesn’t normally send out stuff like these, I though perhaps he has something really important or interesting to tell/show/share. When I clicked on the link, the first thing Facebook did was remove all doubt that I was leaving Facebook to a different site. I do not remember Facebook telling me that before, ever. (I could be wrong here). But onto the new site, the video site YuoTube told me that my Flash player is out of date and that I should update. They provided me with a link to begin update as well, my o my, how thoughtful.
First, the email I got:
Upon following the link, I get the following:
Clicking on Save File woke up AVG. Thankfully enough!
Scams like these are not as common as you’d think and they hit when you of course, do not expect anything! Look out for suspicious web addresses (this one had an IP address for a web address - that should be reason enough to be highly suspicious), and if anything does not look right, it probably is not (The video site was/is called YuoTube!!). For more details on what this virus does and a brief history, check this out.
The take away
- Whenever you end up leaving ‘any’ website that is trusted by you and others (Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, Youtube etc), that website, first of all, should warn and remind you that now you are in ‘alien territory’. You, for your part, should be careful in visiting these alien sites; without virus protection, you don’t even have to click anything to get infected.
- I really do not know how many worms and viri are residing in your computer, but if you do not have an anti virus software, you are way, way behind the game, friend. Download the FREE AVG software to save yourself against the most common threats.
Happy browsing and stay safe ![]()

The same thing happened to me!.. but it was not detected before installation. Any ideas on how to fix the computer after this “Flash-Update” infects it?
Do you already have AVG? the flash_update.exe is, to the best of my limited knowledge, NOT the name of the virus. It tries to install a Worm (as detected by AVG - plz see the screenshot of the threat detected). AVG tells me it is Worm/Generic_r.CQ, which doesn’t have a single result on Google! Now THIS is the most interesting bit, a worm detected by AVG has no result pages on Google, Yahoo nor MSN (the three search engines I searched).
Again, are you protected? Please, download AVG (free and quite good!) if you are not willing to invest in a good computer protection software.
Good luck and do let me know how it turns out…
Thanks for this! I almost downloaded it today before I thought twice about it. I think I am safe, though it did begin to run.
I got the same thing, but it was on yahoo and i got the worm >_<
It sends the link instead of what I send in IM’s with convincing words like “Super!!” and “Look” so if anyone knows how to fix this please tell me :-<
