The Impressionator

Home pages for websites. The First Impression of your website and a indication of what one can expect from the rest of your webiste. Home page is your website’s impressionator. (No, impressionator is not a word, I made that up, which actually sounds just about right!)

They are everywhere. Like the main door to your house, home pages for website are considered a necessity, more like a ‘welcome, right this way please’. A door to your online mansion of mansions, your website homepage is the main thing, the ‘landing page’, the impressionator, if you may. The single page that is hosted on your single domain that is the doorway to the rest of your website. The. Home. Page.

But it really shouldn’t be this way.

Seth Godin rightly pointed out in one of his blog posts about the inherent flaws flaw in having a home page mentality. Given today’s technology and the average attention span of your average user being equal to your average ameoba (average that!), home pages will soon take a back seat. They do not occupy the dreaded back seat as of now, but they will, because they must.

Yes, some websites need to have just one entrance, but many do not. Each user has different requirements, and they need to be served accordingly.

Landing Pages for your website

A step forward towards home-pages is the now rampant use of Landing Pages. And that is what I plan to do with Treetech now.We deal mostly in website work, so I am going to set up a landing page for user need, God be willing.

A Real Estate ’section’, if you may. A Law Firm section. An E-commerce package. These are all examples, soon to be live examples God be willing, of dedicated home pages.

It does not take a genius to imagine the ease of use if you, say, want a website for your Law Firm, and you are shown exactly what you want to see and not something that I want you to see. But at the end of the day, initially at least, you will be shown what I think you want to see and read about. Only feedback will change that.

Research on gutts

Gutts are cheaper than research

…and we have research reports to prove it.

Research is not the answer, never was and never will be. Why? Because you are not looking for ‘answers’ when you carry out research. You are looking for guide posts, clues, hints, behavior patterns, buying patterns, head counts, sales figures compared with market surveys, survey results compared with common sense, common sense compared with the business plan compared with marketing plan compared with research results. It is easy to get lost, it is even easier to rely on numbers. But numbers are not the answer (please see above :)).

It is important to find a balance between what you see and what your numbers tell you. It is important to get numbers that help in enhancing the bottom line. Research is a tool, and no rabbits are coming out of this hat.

For the next four days, starting from this Monday, Treetech Communications will be involved in expanding, inshALLAH and updating the existing infrastructure. Hicups, unwanted delays and intergallactic activities are expected to happen, so please excercise patience. The inconvenience is regretted, but it is supposedly for the betterment of our clients, especially of the website variety. Thankyou for your patience, and do visit us again, with your browsers and them spaceships.

Peace and God Bless.

vision vs. sight

Used separately, they could easily mean the same thing. Just like using marketing and advertising could mean the same thing, especially if they are not used together. Religion and Faith can mean the same, so can Vision and Sight. But of course, I am here to talk about the difference…

Vision is where your company wants to be. Sight is what you see.

Both are important. Necessary even. Sight gives you feedback. Vision gives you direction. Together, you tweak and adjust and plough ahead. Ideally speaking.

Getting a simple brochure website in Pakistan is sometimes still considered a luxury for some businesses, and it is not because of a high price tag either (many developers in Pakistan are quite cheap in fact, but then again, so is most of thier work). It is because of the perception that perhaps ‘my business is not ready for a website’ or the most common that ‘no one is going to use it’ excuse. But of course, you business will only be ready when you want it to be ready.

For a website to work, especially in Pakistan, you need to work on your vision rather than sight. Pakistani businessmen, generally, are more attuned to ‘now’ as compared to the ‘future’. And ‘now’ has a bad habit of injecting boredom into your business. Boredom can not exist is the realm of visions.
